Brother Gilbert was a monk, aspiring poet and and one of the protagonists of Dragonheart.

Biography[]

Not much is really known about Gilbert's past but what is known is that he has been a monk of an unknown monastery for a very long time and has a liking on writing poems, with one poem being based on King Arthur Pendragon.

He joined Sir Bowen in his hunt for another dragon, wanting to write a poem on his exploits after he slayed a dragon, only referred to as the Scarred One. Upon arriving at a waterfall, which has a hidden cave, Gilbert exposes the dragon that lived there while he was poking on a rock with his quill, which is actually the dragon who was camouflaged. When the dragon hurls the decayed corpses of a soldier and his horse, Gilbert caught the deceased soldier's head, who is actually a late Roman soldier and then freaks out upon seeing the head in a state of decay.

He then continued to write his poem while Bowen goes through the waterfall to stalk the dragon. When a chase ensues, Gilbert immediately began following them until the chase stopped at a glade. A fight ensues until late into the night where it ended in a stalemate. Gilbert continued to but sleepily recite his poem and eventually fell asleep. The next morning, when he found that Bowen is gone he began looking for him until he found him with Kara at a swamp village, where Bowen and the dragon, whom he named Draco, is gonna stage another scam with the villagers not knowing it, just like in Lord Felton's lands. Gilbert was confused at first when Kara tells them that Bowen is conspiring with Draco, to the villagers, they just laughed at her along with Bowen with Gilbert soon joining them. When the scam partially succeeded, Gilbert was fooled into believing that Bowen had succeeded, however, it backfired, when the villagers wanted to carve Draco for meat. Thus, the dragon is forced to flee thus exposing the scam. Gilbert was left baffled until he is forced to flee from the angry villagers with Bowen and Kara until they are surrounded with no way to escape. When Draco rescued them, Gilbert once again freaked out causing him to scream that they are going to die. Bowen managed to soothe him down by telling him that they are just flying.

Draco then took them to Avalon, the resting place of King Arthur Pendragon and the Knights of the Round Table. There, Gilbert said a prayer before Arthur's tomb. When he finished, he and Kara are ready to go back and oppose king Einon, but Bowen wanted to stay behind, so Gilbert, kara and Draco left him at the tomb. Upon returning to Kara's home-village, Gilbert and Kara tried to convince Hewe, one of the villagers, to help them in revolting against the king, but he rejected. Fortunately thanks to Bowen and Draco, they were able to convince the villagers in preparing for their rebellion. During training, Gilbert began practicing archery. He was able to impress Bowen by letting himself prove to be a natural in using a bow and arrow.

The next day, when Bowen led the peasants into battle against Einon's forces, Gilbert remained hidden in the trees with other archers. During the battle he helped them in shooting down the king's knights. Gilbert then made the mistake of shooting Einon which caused Draco to feel the pain and fell into the castle. This also caused Einon to know that he is immortal and immediately returned to the castle to prevent anyone from killing the dragon. That night, Gilbert went along with Kara and Bowen to infiltrate Einon's castle to rescue Draco. He then went into the castle courtyard upon hearing the commotion caused by Draco. He then watched as Bowen refused to kill Draco, since its was the only way to end Einon's reign since they are bonded. Gilbert then observed in forlorn as the dragon took his last breath and died, after Bowen was forced to kill him when Einon charged at his former mentor. He, along with Bowen, Kara and the villagers then watched as Draco's soul ascended to the stars and become a new star in the constellation Draco, the dragon heaven.

At an unknown point in time, Brother Gilbert opened his own monastery and received a dragon talon from Bowen, that was believed to be from the late Draco. Prior to Gilbert's passing, his scrolls, which he wrote on dragons, was passed to one of his monks Friar Peter, which would later be passed down to the young monk Mansel.
